The narrative begins with the Age of Ancients: Dark Souls

In Dark Souls, several events take place before you even touch the controller. Before you escaped the Undead Asylum, there was nothing but fog. No one lived or died. Only dragons lived, constantly guarding everything. This era was known as the Age of the Ancients.

A mystical fire known as the First Flame erupted underground, attracting a large number of humanoid beings. This fabled Flame established the distinctions between light and dark, life and death. Essentially, it set time in motion. Three beings entered the Flame and seized the Lord Soul. Gwyn grabbed the Lord Soul of Light, while the Witch of Izalith snatched the Soul of Life. Nito claimed the soul of Death. This gave them incredible strength, transforming them into living gods.

Meanwhile, the Furtive Pygmy discovered the Dark Soul, which gave the Hollows with a valuable resource known as Humanity. Thus, humanity were born into this planet, but their strength was little in contrast to the three Lords.

With their newfound strength, the three Lords waged war on the dragons above ground in order to conquer control of the surface. Unfortunately, these dragons could not be killed by usual ways. Seath the Scaleless, a dragon born without scales, betrayed his species.

He explains to the Lords that dragons are eternal as long as they retain their stone scales. However, the destructive force of lightning might deplete their defenses. So Gwyn summoned some lightning bolts, clearing the way for the other two Lords to claim victory.

Nito unleashed the plague of death on the weak dragons. Meanwhile, the Witch of Izalith burnt down their homes, leaving them with nowhere to go. This chain of events killed off nearly all of the world’s dragons, leaving behind inferior mimics such as drakes and wyverns. Seath was the sole remaining real dragon. As a result, the Lords moved to the surface and claimed it for themselves.

With the Lords in command of the planet, the Age of Fire starts. Consider it a golden age, when everything blossomed. Gwyn built his capital, Anor Londo, on top of a mountain to be closer to the sun. Nito grabbed control of the underground catacombs, spreading the idea of death from below, while the Witch of Izalith researched fire. This resulted in the Pyromancy powers included in the Dark Souls games.

Seath sat contentedly in his new empire. Gwyn elevated him to prince rank in recognition of his contributions to the Lords. Seath was also given access to a lab where he could do research on creatures in order to better comprehend eternal life. Some residents of Anor Londo were outraged by these frequently brutal tests.

Havel the Rock, a faithful knight under Gwyn’s rule, objected to Seath’s experiments. He began organizing a force to take down Seath, but Gwyn objected. The monarch ultimately imprisoned his companion, condemning him to become Hollow and become insane. Unfortunately, those experiments drove Seath insane as well, albeit he finally discovers the key to immortality — kind of.

Artorias and the Abyss – Dark Souls

Artorias and the Abyss - Dark Souls

In this reality, a little settlement named Oolacile lies above the Abyss. This Abyss may be regarded as the darkness that exists inside all of humanity, and it has the potential to extinguish the First Flame if left uncontrolled. There’s also Kaathe, the primeval snake, who frequently expresses his wish to see the Age of Fire end. He persuades the inhabitants of Oolacile to enter the Abyss and dig up the burial of Manus, the primordial man. When the beast awakens, he loses control of his humanity. This incident exacerbates the Abyss’s expansion.

In order to halt the Abyss, Gwyn sent his loyal knight Artorias to Oolacile. Artorias faces Manus with his wolf pup Sif, but ultimately loses. It is at this moment that Manus searches for his prized pendant throughout time and space, eventually locating it in the future. He draws the pendant to him, along with the Chosen Undead (your Dark Souls character). The Chosen Undead defeats Manus, rescuing the world from the Abyss and safeguarding Sif.

Gwyn enjoys his affluence for a while, but all good things come to an end. The first flame starts to fade. The Lords are alarmed at this unexpected development, as the Flame has been the source of their strength since the Age of Fire started.

The Witch of Izalith seeks to replicate the Flame based on her research. Ultimately, she fails, and the tainted fire consumes her soul, transforming her into the Bed of Chaos. This incident ignites the Flame of Chaos, spawning a plethora of demons that haunt the area.

As a final resort, Gwyn gives himself to the Flame, allowing his soul to revive the flames. This works, prolonging the Flame’s life as he sits within it. He becomes the first Lord of Cinder, a being capable of sacrificing itself to reignite the Flame.

Becoming a Lord of Cinder is merely a temporary solution that postpones the final darkness. Furthermore, by rekindling the Flame, he cursed humanity with immortality. Undead humans always return, but as they die, they become Hollow.

Hollows and the curse of the undead – Dark Souls

The fading flames and the presence of the undead are inextricably interwoven in the “Dark Souls” mythos. When the gods found their Lord Souls, they set out to re-create the earth and usher in the Age of Fire. The Furtive Pygmy, a mystery character, exploited their Dark Soul in unique ways. They divided the Dark Soul and used its power to create humanity. The gods showed little attention for humans until Gwyn’s flame faded. Desperate to keep the flame alive, the gods realized that humans might be utilized as kindling. Unfortunately for the gods, humanity had little reason to burn a portion of themselves away.

That is, until the curse of the undead spread over the nation. Over time, the undead lose their rationality and become hollow. The only way to avoid from becoming Hollow is to collect humanity and present it to bonfires around the world. Burning humanity reverses Hollowing and extends the Age of Fire, albeit its nourishment is not as powerful as a Lord offering themselves up to fully reignite the First Flame. Nobody knows exactly where the curse of the undead came from, but it’s awfully handy for Gwyn and the other gods who want the Age of Fire to last forever.
